May 13, 2010

Objective:
Standard 2: Plan and design a website.

Standard 3 and 4: The student will use HTML and commercial web design software (ie: Dreamweaver) to create attractive web pages.

Standard 5: The student will create and prepare images to integrate with web site designs. Example image software: Fireworks, Photoshop, GIMP, Paint, etc.

Learning Outcomes:
Students will achieve a moderately to highly skilled status by showing proficiency in the following:

  • Explore and understand basic good web development and design principles, such as: color, white space, font styles, viewing patterns, background images, balance, etc.
  • Plan the layout considering consistency, readability, proportion, navigation, etc.
  • Use proper naming conventions and file structure. Understand file types and filename extensions.
  • Create paragraphs, line breaks horizontal rules, ordered and unordered list, and tables. Emphasize proofreading, spell checking and grammar.
  • Use headings and font enhancements (bold, italics, etc.).
  • Create hyperlinks and mail links.
  • Modify page properties. For example: background, font (styles and colors), links. Insert images and include attributes (such as alt, vspace and hspace, size, align, etc).
  • Use colors to change backgrounds and text. Use image for backgrounds.
  • Open and save an image in a web friendly format. Crop and resize various images. Optimize an image (resize and change resolution for optimal load time). Enhance an image to improve photo quality (red eye, autocolor, etc.).

Class Procedure:
This site is for real and will be launched this summer. Take this assignment seriously! The artwork is not so important, however, it should be manageable. My multimedia classes will be designing a logo so you don't need to design one, but you are welcome to.

Your client is an adventure travel business that specializes in hot air ballooning, white water rafting, and mountain biking outfitter trips in Souther Utah (Moab, Blanding-Valley of the Gods). The name of this production company is SplatRabbit Adventures and you can go to their website here. There is nothing really there for inspiration since you will be that inspiration. You have been brought in to help promote this new venture and your first task is to design a web site.

Design a web site for SplatRabbit Adventures utilizing the information above as to what or how to represent the company. Utilize any of the software you have mastered over the school year to create the site (such as Dreamweaver, Notepad, Photoshop, Freehand, Inkscape, GIMP, Flash, etc.). You must send your completed site to rathke at teacher dot com in a .zip file for credit.

Assignment Due:
There is no exception to this deadline due to the end of the year approaching. You web site is due by the end of class on Monday, May 24, 2010.
