Intro to TV Broadcasting
2nd Term

1st Term | Study Guide (click on "Broadcasting" tab) | Media Release Form

Mon, Jan. 11 through Fri., Jan. 15, 2010

We will attempt to take the Utah State Skills Assessment (final exam) despite the problems the state is having with the server. If it is deemed impossible, I'll come up with some way to adjust the grades or assess you (test you) in another way. Otherwise, it's business as usual with rotating through duties, recording broadcasts, and posting to www.stansburyhigh.tv.

Tue., Jan. 5 through Thur., Jan. 7, 2010

Welcome back to school from Winter Break! Remember school? Well, there are only 5 class periods left in this term. We will continue with the broadcasting work in the studio today so check Evernote for your assignments. Additionally, there will be a state test on broadcasting that I will use as the final for this course. You may want to check out a textbook and have a look at it before the test. I will give the test on Monday, January 11, 2010.

Mon, Dec. 14 through Fri., Dec. 18, 2009

We rotated through the rolls with everyone getting a chance to work on the TV broadcast. As broadcasting throughout the school is still not up and running, our programs are posted to our own website at stansburyhigh.tv for you to show your families.

Thursday, December 10, 2009

Hectic day today. First take this test (as promised). Then log in to Evernote and start writing the script. Today's production staff is already listed. It's business as usual AND a test to boot. Then next class period I will come around and grade you on your progress in learning editing in Final Cut Pro (that's Monday, December 14 ,2009).

Mon., Nov.30 through Tue., Dec. 8, 2009

Test scores for the last test were pathetic. Since it was open-note, this tells me you are not reading or not taking notes or both. If you are not involved with production (script writing, editing, studio work), you should be reading or rereading Ch. 4-7 or working or Final Cut Pro. Nothing else is permissible!

Tuesday, November 24, 2009

First thing today, you need to take this test. You may use your notes, but not the book. Following the test, you need to check out Evernote and rewrite the daily bulletin as we have done last week, be sure to watch the dates to make sure you are not including anything that has expired. We will NOT shoot the newscast this week, but you MUST turn in your script for credit.

Wed., Nov. 18 through Fri., Nov. 20, 2009

We spent the remainder of this week writing scripts from the daily bulletin in the first 25 minutes of class, shooting the news broadcast in the studio for practice in the second 25 minutes, then frantically editing the news cast in the last 25 minutes so that we can see if we are able to pull this off without live broadcast capabilities and have something to show in the last 10 minutes of class.

Monday, November 16, 2009

Read Ch. 6 in the textbook Television Production Handbook and take careful notes. There is no assignment attached to this reading but THERE WILL BE A TEST. Retention is always better if you take notes while you read even if you never look at them again.

Tue., Nov. 10 through Thur., Nov. 12, 2009

Today we started learning Final Cut Pro which is part of the Final Cut Studio software that I am currently installing in the lab. This software was specifically purchased for the TV studio. Since this is new to all of us, we will need to teach ourselves and each other how to use this software. For this purpose, I am putting together a tutorial page to help us.

Friday, November 6, 2009

As mentioned last time, you were supposed to read Ch. 4 and Ch. 5 in the textbook and to take good notes for the test. First thing today, you need to take this test. You may use your notes, but not the book. Following the test, you will need to rewrite today's announcements in A/V script format as fast and as good as you can (I will hand them out to you while you're taking the test).

Wednesday, November 4, 2009

Read Ch. 4 and Ch. 5 in the textbook Television Production Handbook and take careful notes. There is no assignment attached to this reading but THERE WILL BE A TEST. Retention is always better if you take notes while you read even if you never look at them again.

Monday, November 2, 2009

We are practicing writing by taking the daily announcements that are emailed to teachers and creating scripts in Celtx. Then we are taking turns in the TV studio reading our work in order to get more comfortable in front of the camera and to improve our writing. The scripts that you wrote today should have been turned in for a grade.
