Basic classroom format today with a bit more. Everything is set to go into production as usual. Check Evernote for the production team assignments then work on today's script. After the script writing is done (don't turn them in), you need to take this test. You can use your notes, just not the textbook. Production team members take the test after you're done in the studio. (Note: You can only take this test once, anyone taking the test before class starts or after it ends will score a zero).

Basic classroom structure today. After the production team finished in the studio, I went over Ch. 2 in the textbook in preparation for Monday's test. You can review what was discussed here.
Thurs., Mar. 4 through Tue., Mar. 16, 2010
We continue with the basic classroom structure: come in, check Evernote, write script, go into production (if you are on the production team. Then study Ch. 1 (over again considering the scores), as well as Ch. 2 and 3.

Class did well while I was gone Friday at the UCET (Utah Coalition for Educational Technology) Conference. And on assembly schedule no less. Today it's back to regular production schedule. Once scripts are done today, turn them in. Then you need to start reading Ch. 2 in the textbook and take good notes. Last Friday's retake of the Ch. 1 test was quite disappointing. I have entered them in SIS (replacing your old score with Friday's score if there was an improvement. Note that just answering 2 questions more correctly than the first test improved your grade 5%. So taking good notes and studying is key!

Basic classroom format today. Everything is set to go into production without me there. Check Evernote for the production team assignments. After the script writing is done (don't turn them in), you need to take this test. You can use your notes, just not the textbook. Production team members take the test after you're done in the studio. (Note: You can only take this test once, anyone taking the test before class starts or after it ends will score a zero).
Mon., Feb. 22 through Wed., Feb. 24, 2010
After the production team is done in the studio today, we'll go over the second part of Ch. 1 in class. This should help you for when we retake the a test since you all pretty much bombed it last time. The notes from Section 1.1 and Section 1.2 of Ch. 1 are online for your convenience.
Thursday, February 18, 2010
Class starts as always today. You come in, you check Evernote to see if you are on the production team, you start writing today's script (which you will turn in for credit). Once the script has been chosen and the production team goes into the studio AND you have finished your script (written, printed, and turned it in) you need to take the Ch. 1 Quiz. Production team members take the quiz once they are done in the studio.
Mon., Feb. 8 through Tue., Feb. 16, 2010
When you are not working on the daily production, you need to be thoroughly studying Ch. 1 (sections 1 & 2) in the textbook. There will be a test on this material shortly. You can check the study guide (a link is also provided above) and you can check out the slide show I used.
Tue., Feb. 2 through Thur., Feb. 4, 2010
Due to UBSCT testing, there will be no broadcast today. Instead, read Ch. 1 (pgs. 2-20) in the TV Production Handbook (textbook). Be sure to outline the chapter as you go. The textbook is rather technical and is written for college. College level students take notes while they read. It helps with retention of information. We'll cover this chapter on Thursday. You can check the study guide (a link is also provided above) and you can check out the slide show I used.
Also, remember to bring your Media Release Form to class signed! There will be a film crew and a photo crew next week in school. They want to showcase my lab and students. Therefore, you will need to return to me a Media Permission Form first thing next week. Click on the link to download a copy if you lost the one I gave you. If I don't have one of these on file, you will be sent to the library (not the computer lab in the library) during filming.
Wed., Jan. 27 through Fri., Jan. 29, 2010
On Monday we went into production for the first time this semester. You did very well and your efforts are now available online at stansburyhigh.tv for your viewing enjoyment. Next week we'll review our broadcasts from 1/25, 1/27, and 1/29 for the purpose of critique so we can improve our work. Well done being thrown straight from the frying pan into the fire. Welcome to television! On Monday I asked that you turn in your scripts for grading. If you have not done so, you can turn in a script from either Wednesday of Friday for credit on that assignment.

Today we will try an actual broadcast recorded in the studio with those veterans in the class and some of you new students this semester. As described on the first day of class, this situation is basically moments of panic followed by moments of stark, raving terror. As you come into class, be sure to open Evernote and see if you are in the production schedule. Then look at the Daily Bulletin and start writing your script in Celtx. All scripts will be turned in for credit so you need to print them out. One script will be selected by the producer for broadcast. When you are done with your script, you will need to do the following:
Last summer while working at KUTV, the news director at told me on my tour the day I started there that everyone has a college degree and can write well. It is now time to exercise our writing abilities. I told you that writing something that runs 25 seconds is quite a challenge. We won't start doing that just yet. Instead, we'll start with a simple writing exercise called "What's YOUR Story?" This is where you write about an event or defining moment in your life that tells something about you. This is not an autobiography, we don't have time to hear about your whole life. We just want a story that tells something about you. Your story should be written in Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, or some other word processor. It should be at least one page single spaced and be emailed to rathke at teacher dot com by the beginning of class on Wednesday, January 27, 2010. Note: Those of you from last semester do NOT need to do this assignment. You are more than making up for it by helping with the broadcasts.
Thursday, January 21, 2010
Welcome to the first day of class. Today you will receive my disclosure, which is due back to me next time we meet or you will not have access to the computers. And you will forfeit points since this is your first assignment. I will discuss what my expectations are and what the rules in my classroom will be this year. Your disclosure is due back to me signed by you and a parent/guardian by Monday, January 25, 2010.
