The Ad Campaign

Objective:
Standard 1: Students will identify and describe the planning function of management.
Learning Outcomes:
Students will achieve a moderately to highly skilled status by showing proficiency in the following:
- Explain what planning is and the importance of planning.
- Explain the business decision-making process.
- Distinguish between strategic (long-term) and operational (short-term) plans.
- Identify planning tools used in project planning (budgets, schedules, policies, etc.).
Coursework Procedure:
You have been entrusted with the creation of a whole marketing campaign for a new product: Organically grown broccoli.
To market this wonderful vegetable, you have to make broccoli tasty to the masses. You have been told that you need to shoot a couple having a romantic dinner, that includes broccoli, in at least 3 locations around the world (no more than one location may be in the US) for a television commercial and a magazine/web ad campaign.
Something of this magnitude requires a significant amount of planning. You will need to consider several things like locations, actors/models, equipment, travel, budget, menu, time frames, etc. Here is a list of some of the things you must consider. The list is by no means finite. You may add to it as your research warrants:
- You will need to build an outline of your needs
- You need to create a schedule for shooting from pre-production through post-production.
- Include travel time
- Include time to edit the commercial and create the print/web ads
- Include shooting time
- You will need to create a budget. (Best estimates from research you do on the Internet)
- You will need to create a time-line/Gantt chart of the whole process.
And you must present all of this to the class as a PowerPoint presentation. I'm not going to a stickler on your figures for the budget, this is all new to you. I am looking for organization, thoroughness, use of planning techniques and materials, etc.
NOTE: For this assignment, you may want to explore mind mapping software as was shown in class, Gantt charting software or Microsoft Excel macros, outlining software, etc.
