Go to: 1st Term, and Study Guide (click on "Business Management" tab)
Thurs., Oct. 22 through Wed., Oct. 28, 2009
Today I would like you to look at online magazines and other news sources for information on ethics and social responsibility. From these articles you should find the information needed to create an Ethics and Social Responsibility presentation. This assignment is due Wednesday, October 28, 2009. NOTE: This assignment will count on 2nd term given that this due date is the last day of the 1st term. Therefore, you need to focus on any missing assignments you may have and get those turned in by next Wednesday first.
Tuesday, October 20, 2009
Read Ch. 4 in the textbook on Ethics and Social Responsibility (pgs. 82-102). Then complete Recalling Key Concepts 1-6 and Thinking Critically 1-5 (pg. 102). Make sure that you include the question as part of your answer or write out the question and then answer it. Then complete Assessing Academic Skills and the written portion (Solve The Problem) of Applying Management Principles (pg. 103) and be ready to present this last part to the class. This assignment is due by the beginning of class on Thursday, October 22, 2009.
Wed., Oct. 14 through Fri., Oct. 16, 2009
As a review of Ch. 2, and as a means to prepare you for a future test on management theories, I have uploaded a management theory presentation assignment. You must complete your presentation as described on the assignment sheet and email it to rathke@teacher.com by the end of class on Friday, October 16, 2009, and be prepared to present your findings in class on Tuesday, October 20, 2009.

Hopefully you carefully read Ch. 8 in the textbook last week as instructed. Because if you did, and you took good notes and you did the assignment, then you should have no problem with this Ch. 8 test. It is an online test that includes matching, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and short answer to suit everyone's testing likes and dislikes. Remember, it is quiet in class during a test and anything that indicates that you may have a cell phone with you is considered an act of cheating (turn them off is what this means). Have fun, or should I say 'good luck', with this test.
Thursday, October 8, 2009
Read Ch. 8 on Decision-Making (pgs. 174-197) in the textbook. Then complete Recalling Key Concepts 1-4 and Thinking Critically 1-4 (pg. 198). Make sure that you include the question as part of your answer or write out the question and then answer it. This assignment is due by the end of class on Thursday, October 8, 2009. WARNING: You may want to re-read Ch. 1-3 for the test on Monday, Oct. 12th.
Tuesday, October 6, 2009
We did an in-class exercise today where we took the scenario of being lost at sea. We had to prioritize the items we managed to save. Then we broke into groups to come to a consensus on our choices and then presented those decisions to the class.
Wednesday, September 30, 2009
Read Ch. 3 (pgs. 52-75) then complete the following at the end of the chapter: Recalling Key Concepts 1-5 and Thinking Critically 1-5 (pg. 76). Either write out the question or incorporate it into your answer. Turn in your work by the end of the class period.
NOTE: Do NOT start on the assignment first and try to find the answers like it is some kind of treasure hunt. You must read the chapter because I write test questions from the parts of the chapter that are not covered by the assignment. Just so you know... oh, and have a nice day.

Today we get our first look at our new textbooks. I would like you to read Ch. 2 (pgs. 30-49) then complete the following at the end of the chapter: Recalling Key Concepts 1-6 and Thinking Critically 1-5 (pg. 50).

The discussion regarding communication continued today. Topics included active listening, oral and written communication, interpersonal communication, semantics, and more. Be sure to review the notes for any possible future test (hint, hint).
Tuesday, September 22, 2009
Today you presented your learning styles and possible careers to the class. Then we returned to our discussion of communication. We started by discussing sexist language after filling out a classroom exercise. [The exercise was not turned in for credit.]
Friday, September 18, 2009
We discussed eight different learning styles (you can review them in the class notes for a future test) and looked at how we identify with them. Which one do we primarily identify with? Do we identify with others? What careers would be a good fit with these learning styles? This is important information to know not just for your own career path but you need to understand this about people who work for you as well. If you understand their learning styles, you are more able to assign tasks to the appropriate person. The one who is most likely to best achieve the task's outcome. After the discussion, I gave you an assignment to analyze your own learning styles and research careers that fit you according to your findings. Write out your Learning Styles and Careers analysis on paper and be prepared to present your findings to the class on Tuesday, September 22, 2009. After you have presented to class, turn in your findings (the written portion of this assignment).

I reviewed the basics of what management is quickly with the class, then I let everyone retake the test from Monday since they all did so poorly on it. You can review an outline here (click on the tab on the right labeled "Business Management", then click on the bullet next to the topic you want to review).

Well, the treats are over and all joking aside, there IS a test today. When instructed, you will need to follow this link to the test. This is test. That means that, yes, it DOES count on your grade. Also, no talking! And, no cell phones heard of visible in class or you will fail the test (no exceptions). After you have finished the test, you may work to complete the reflection paper on the Business Week article.
Thursday, September 10, 2009
I reviewed a bit about the management structure (senior, middle, and supervisory management) and their responsibilities. Then I discussed management tasks (planning, organizing, staffing, leading, controlling). I followed this up with management types (interpersonal, informational, and decisional). All of the terms that are highlighted are important and may appear on a future test. You can review an outline here (click on the tab on the right labeled "Business Management", then click on the bullet next to the topic you want to review). I gave you an assignment to write a one-page reflection paper on an article you read on the Business Week management page. This assignment is due on Monday, September 14, 2009.
Tuesday, September 8, 2009
We will discuss communication after taking the Communication Perception Test that I handed out in class. Then I'll show you some note-taking techniques that will help you study for tests in this class. Mainly, I'll explain the Cornell Notetaking Method.
Tues., Sept. 1 through Thur., Sept. 3, 2009
Today we addressed the issue: What is management? (Simply, it's organize stuff for profit). I read you the technical, scholarly definitions and simplified them for you. You can check out my lecture outline here (click on the tab on the right labeled "Business Management", then click on the bullet next to the topic you want to review). Then I directed you to find an article on the Internet regarding a business failure of some kind and tie that back into a reflective essay. You can get the details on the assignment sheet. This assignment is due on Friday, September 4, 2009. Be ready to discuss your article and reflection in class.
Friday, August 28, 2009
As mentioned in class, when you were given the writing assignment, that understanding who we are and how we arrive at decisions is necessary to know so we will realize why we act the way we do. It helps in managing people. Therefore, in class, we will do an exercise filling out the survey of needs and wants survey. Then we'll discuss the difference between needs and wants and how they apply to personal financial planning utilizing Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. [If you like, there is a podcast you can listen to from a previous year's Entrepreneurship class on Mazlow].
Wednesday, August 26, 2009
An integral part of management is having a good understanding of where you came from and who you are. This may identify what sort of manager you could become. Today's exercise is called "What's YOUR Story?" This is where you write about an event or defining moment in your life that tells something about you. This is not an autobiography, we don't have time to hear about your whole life. We just want a story that tells something about you. Your story should be written in Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, or some other word processor. It should be at least one page single spaced and be emailed to rathke@teacher.com by the beginning of class on Friday, August 28, 2009.
Monday, August 24, 2009
Welcome to the first day of class. Today you will receive my disclosure, which is due back to me next time we meet or you will not have access to the computers. And you will forfeit points since this is your first assignment. I will discuss what my expectations are and what the rules in my classroom will be this year. Your disclosure is due back to me signed by you and a parent/guardian by Friday, August 28, 2009.
