I will grade your cartoon image today. While I do that, we are going to explore vector graphics today. Remember those from a lecture at the beginning of the year? Well, now you must create or redo your previous personal logo in Adobe Illustrator. This assignment is due Tuesday, November 3, 2009.
Wed., Oct. 14 through Thur., Oct. 22, 2009
I will show you a couple of examples of our next assignment: placing yourself in a cartoon image. Then I will come around to grade your sports story assignment and your historic image assignment. The cartoon image assignment is due by the end of class on Friday, October 16, 2009. [Note: I have extended the due date on this assignment. It is now due by the end of class on Thursday, October 22, 2009].
Tues., Oct. 6 through Mon., Oct. 12, 2009
I will come around to grade your sports story assignment . You will need to start working on your historic image assignment. This is where you download a historic picture form the Internet and then you take a digital image of yourself and then place yourself in the downloade picture like you were always there. This assignment is due by the end of class on Monday, October 12, 2009.
Mon., Sept.28 through Wed., Sept. 30, 2009
I will come around to grade your news story assignment. You will need to start working on the next composite image assignment that you will insert yourself into. This sports story assignment is where you download a picture from the Internet and then you take a digital image of yourself and then place yourself in the downloade picture like you were always there. This assignment is due by the end of class on Wednesday, September 30, 2009.
Tues., Sept. 22 through Thur., Sept. 24, 2009
On Thursday, September 24th, Tooele County will be filming a promotional DVD and would like to showcase the most technologically advanced classroom in the district (mine). So, it is possible that your face will appear in this video. However, the only way this can happen is if you submit to me a Media Permission Form signed by your parents no later than Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at 3:00PM. I MUST have this form on file for you to be filmed. If your parents don't give permission, or you forget to return the form, you will be sent to the library for the duration of the filming.

Well, we are figuring out how to get the pictures off of the digital cameras for assignments finally. Here is the process:
- After you connect the camera to the iMac via USB and turn it on, open up iPhoto.
- Select the camera from the list on the left. The pictures on the camera should show up.
- Select your images and push the "Import Selected" button on the bottom. iPhoto will then ask if you want to leave the images on the camera or delete them. I would leave them on the camera in case a previous student needs to re-import their picture.
- Select "Last Import" on the left side if iPhoto hasn't already done that for you.
- You can then drag your images to your folder. This copies them to your folder, they still remain in iPhoto. If you don't want them there you can select "Photos" and then "Move to trash".
I will come around to grade your "You're-In-The-Image" assignment. You will need to start working on the first composite image assignment that you will insert yourself into. This News Story assignment is where you download a picture from the Internet and then you take a digital image of yourself and then place yourself in the downloade picture like you were always there. This assignment is due by the end of class on Thursday, September 24, 2009.
Mon., Sept. 14 through Wed., Sept. 16, 2009
I will come around to grade your fictitious product assignment. You will need to start working on the first composite image assignment that you will insert yourself into. This "You're-In-The-Image" assignment is where you download a picture from the Internet and then you take a digital image of yourself and then place yourself in the downloade picture like you were always there. This assignment is due by the end of class on Wednesday, September 16, 2009.
Tuesday, September 8, 2009
I will come around to your computer to grade your logo assignment. Meanwhile, you need to start working on the next assignment: Create an advertisement for a fictitious product. You must have a completed ad created by the end of class on Thursday, September 10, 2009.
Tue., Sept. 1 through Thur., Sept. 3, 2009
I will briefly review file types from last week. Then we will learn about raster and vector graphics. Raster graphics are basically bitmaps, little pixels with image information. Vector graphics use a mathematical equation to create the image. They don't contain as many colors as raster graphics, so they are not used for photos. But they are infinitely scaleable, so they work very well for logos. Vector formats include Scalable Vector Graphic (.svg) and Adobe Illustrator (.ai). If you still need a better understanding, you need to read more about the differences between raster and vector images.
Then we will explore graphic creation software. In our new lab will use one or more of the programs that have been loaded onto the Macs last week. I'll go over Seashore, Photoshop, and Illustrator. You will then start on your first assignment: create your own personal logo. This assignment is due Thursday, September 3, 2009 and will be graded on your computer at the end of class.

One of the most important elements in almost all multimedia is the ability to properly create and manipulate images. Therefore, we will start talking about image classifications and types. First there are two classifications of images: raster or vector.
Raster graphics are the most common and are comprised of tiny squares of color information known as bits. The array of bits in an image is called a bitmap. Image files originally were all bitmaps, however, large images can be rather large files in size as well. Therefore, there were file types created that involve compression. The most popular such file type is the JPEG (.jpg). An uncompressed bitmap that includes meta data (text information about the image contained inside the image file) that is popular for its quality is called the TIFF format (.tif). Image file formats that allow transparency are Portable Network Graphics (.png) and Graphical Interchange Format (.gif). Look here for a comparison of: JPEG vs. PNG vs. GIF.
Finally, I discussed layered formats used for image manipulation. These formats don't work for printing pictures or uploading to the Internet. They are just formats to work in, then you export your results to a file format I have already mentioned depending on the usage. The most popular is the proprietary Photoshop Document format (.psd) You can work in different layers in Photoshop and then "flatten" the image to save as some other format. Photoshop is the industry standard for image manipulation. However, there is a free, open-source program that can do much of the same work called GIMP (originally stood for Graphical Image Manipulation Program).

An integral part of multimedia and marketing is the ability to convey a message. This is usually done by some form of storytelling. When we get into the video and audio units in this course, we definately will be working on storytelling. Today's exercise is called "What's YOUR Story?" This is where you write about an event or defining moment in your life that tells something about you. This is not an autobiography, we don't have time to hear about your whole life. We just want a story that tells something about you. Your story should be written in Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, or some other word processor. It should be at least one page single spaced and should be emailed to rathke@teacher.com by the beginning of class on Friday, August 28, 2009.

Welcome to the first day of class. Today you will receive my disclosure, which is due back to me next time we meet or you will not have access to the computers. And you will forfeit points since this is your first assignment. I will discuss what my expectations are and what the rules in my classroom will be this year. Your disclosure is due back to me signed by you and a parent/guardian by Friday, August 28, 2009.
