We have been attempting to take the Utah State Skills Assessment if the servers will allow us to. Issues with the server load has prevented us from authorizing the test. Technical support has said they will authorize the test code for this class and they have promised to call me back (they have not). When not waiting to test, be sure to complete your video project and/or the multimedia careers and education research paper or presentation assignment.

Next week we will take the Utah State Skills Assessment (semester final exam). It would be a good idea to review your notes and look at the study guide under the Multimedia tab.

"Time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin' into the future..." as the song goes from the Steve Miller Band. You only have 4 class periods to complete your video project and one of those will be taken up by the semester test. Not to scare you or apply any pressure but...

Welcome back to school from Winter Break! Remember school? Well, there are only 5 class periods left in this term. You can use this time to finish the video project or the multimedia careers and education research paper or presentation assignment. You can use the time to finish any missing assignments for partial credit (some points are better than no points). Or you can use the time to review your lecture notes or check out the study guide for the semester final exam which will be given on Friday, January 8, 2010.
Tue., Dec. 15 through Thur., Dec. 17, 2009
You should be working on your research paper/presentation on multimedia careers assignment that is due by Thursday, December 17, 2009. Additionally, I have moved the due date for the Video Project to Monday, January 11, 2010 due to the late start on the assignment and factors related to being in a new lab, etc.
Friday, December 11, 2009
While your team is working on your video project you can work on the career research portion of the course. Here is a research paper/presentation on multimedia careers assignment that is due by Thursday, December 17, 2009.
Mon., Dec. 7 through Wed., Dec. 9, 2009
A couple of things today: (1) Video projects are due December 18th. To date only one team has borrowed equipment. That means most everyone in class is right on track for an F this term. Your video should be shot by now and you should be downloading and editing, no kidding! (2) The State of Utah requires a test at the end of each semester be given (called the Utah State Skills Assessment). This test will count on your grade. I covered in class today a lot of what you need to know. If you understand some core concepts, you should be able to get through the test just fine. The core concepts can be found under the Multimedia Tab in the Study Guide. The test will be give right after the Christmas break.
Thursday, December 3, 2009
Work with your teams to get ready for video production. I may have to extend the assignment past the Christmas holiday since I am not there to lend out equipment or help you download your video to the computer (the cables are locked up). However, this is no excuse to put off working on this project when I return since I have NOT yet moved the due date!
Tuesday, December 1, 2009
NOTE: Teams are now FINAL. Check the team page to look for any changes or additions to your teams. Changes made since last week are noted in red. In some instances, teams were created from multiple classes and are so noted. Meet with your team, share your video ideas, discuss which ONE idea you will be putting in production. You will plan your production because you will only have 3 weeks to shoot and edit. Look over the video production assignment sheet so your team will know what is expected of you. If you need to borrow camera equipment, bring a signed Digital Media Contract with you to school ASAP if you want to borrow equipment. You can download and print a copy here.
Wednesday, November 25, 2009
Guess what? The teams ARE NOT finalized. I will finish the teams this week sometime. There will be a few changes but I will try to keep them mainly the way they are right now with a few slight adjustments. Any issues we will deal with when I return next week.
Monday, November 23, 2009
Over the weekend I will be finalizing the teams. On Monday, in class, check the team page to verify who is on your team (not before Monday). Then meet with your team, share your video ideas, discuss which ONE idea you will be putting in production. You will plan your production because you will only have 3 weeks to shoot and edit. Look over the video production assignment sheet so your team will know what is expected of you. If you need to borrow camera equipment, bring a signed Digital Media Contract with you to school on Tuesday, December 1, 2009. You can download and print a copy here.
Thursday, November 19, 2009
Today the storyboard of your treatment is due. If I haven't yet graded your treatment, then you should turn in your storyboard next time. Also, your email to me regarding who is on your team is due today as well. I will finalize teams over the weekend, assign those who haven't emailed me to a team and adjust teams as needed. If you are not working on anything at the moment, then you MUST work on teaching yourself Final Cut Pro. I have some tutorials listed for you, you can click on the link or go to 'Resources' under the drop-down menu above. And remember that 'Google is your friend!' I have uploaded a test we did in the TV studio yesterday that you can use to practice editing on. You can download it here.
Tuesday, November 17, 2009
Not everyone has turned in a treatment yet. This is required of everyone even though this is a group project. Then you need to storyboard your treatment AFTER it is returned to you for grading. This assignment is due by the end of class on Thursday, November 19, 2009.
Additionally, I would like you to consider who you would like in your video production team from class. Notify Mr. Rathke of who your team members are via email by Thursday, November 19, 2009. You may have as many as three total in each team. If someone is not in a team, I will place them. The teams will get together next week to determine the project they will shoot (more on this later). Watch out for the due dates on this project since the deadlines come up quickly and you can't wait until the last minute to complete this project. NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED.
Mon., Nov. 9 through Wed., Nov. 11, 2009
First off, email your redo or your personal logo in Adobe Illustrator assignment to rathke@teacher.com. As part of our introduction into video production, I will discuss the stages of production in class. These include the treatment, the script/screenplay, the storyboard, and then the production which includes shooting video and editing video/audio. Then you need to start thinking of story ideas for your video. Once you have an idea for a story, write a treatment and turn it in. This assignment is due on Wednesday, November 11, 2009.
Tues., Nov. 3 through Thur., Nov. 5, 2009
Welcome to the second term. Your grades have been transfered to the second term in SIS because you don't get a 1st term grade on your report card. As a result, there are no assignments under 1st term in SIS any longer. You started working on an assignment last week to create or redo your previous personal logo in Adobe Illustrator. This assignment is due Tuesday, November 3, 2009. If you have finished this assignment, then you need to start working on Storyboarding Your Life. The storyboard is basis of all film and videol production and marks the beginning of our video unit. This assignment is due by the end of class on Thursday, November 5, 2009.
